Shielding Coatings for Electronics

EMI/RFI shielding coatings are thermal sprayed coatings of metal that protect against unwanted disturbances affecting electrical circuits due to either radio frequency or electromagnetic interference. Typically a sprayed coating of zinc or aluminum is applied to enclosures to prevent stray radiation from either entering or exiting the enclosure, protecting the onboard electronics as well as peripheral electronics.

The shielding material can be applied to virtually all products, including plastic, painted or coated surfaces and virtually any size; from cell phone covers to large structures and enclosures. Coatings are thin enough not to interfere with product assembly.

Industrial applications include process control, medical devices, mobile communications hut door seals, cell phones, and marine electronics.

HVOF coatings can survive harsh service conditions, particularly in wear and many corrosion applications, which greatly increase component service life. The smooth, as-sprayed surface, uniform chemistry and low porosity of the coating can be finished to very smooth surface profiles.

What is Thermal Spray?

Thermal spraying is a group of coating processes in which metallic and non-metallic materials are deposited in a molten or semi-molten condition to form a coating. Coating materials include metals, alloys, carbides, ceramics, plastics, cermets, composites and blended materials.
